From the feature card:
Charles Spurgeon's story has something of a fairy tale beginning: a country teenage pastor arrives in London, the greatest city of his day, and becomes a preaching sensation. Crowds flock to hear him and his church grows to the thousands. His sermons are published and sold around the world. Charles was the most famous preacher of the 19th century.
But popularity was not his goal. Rather, it was to proclaim God's Word. Sometimes that meant saying hard things. He condemned the evils of his day, like injustice, oppression, and slavery. He called out the sins of his hearers, like gambling, drunkenness, and hypocrisy. Many opposed him as a result.
Yet, for all of that, his message was not about self-righteousness, but grace. All those sins pointed his hearers to their need of a Savior. Charles loved to tell people of Jesus, the Son of God, who took on their humanity and gave his life as a sacrifice for them, bearing their sin and conquering death. Anyone who turned from sin and trusted in him would be reconciled to God.
In a world as uncertain as a deck of cards, Charles pointed people to the certainty of God's love in Christ.
