The Gospel
What it means to be a Christian
Post Tenebras Lux · After Darkness, Light
Act One
The Problem
Before there is good news, there is the truth we’d rather not face.
One
God Is Holy
God is absolutely and perfectly holy; therefore He cannot commit or approve of evil. As Sovereign Creator, He made everything and rules everything — and He requires holiness of us as well.
“You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
Two
We Are Sinners
According to Scripture, everyone is guilty of sin: “there is no man who does not sin.” That doesn’t mean we’re incapable of human kindness — but we are utterly incapable of understanding, loving, or pleasing God on our own.
Three
We Cannot Save Ourselves
God’s holiness and justice demand that all sin be punished by eternal death. That is why simply changing our patterns of behavior can never solve our sin problem or erase its consequences. The debt is real, and it is past our power to pay.
light.
Act Two
The Solution
What we could never do, God has done in His Son.
One
Christ’s Perfect Life
God’s holiness demands a righteousness we do not have. So Christ lived the flawless, obedient life we failed to live — satisfying the very holiness that condemned us, on our behalf.
Two
His Substitutionary Death
Though God’s justice demands death for sin, His love provided a Savior who paid the penalty and died in the place of sinners. Christ’s death satisfied the demands of God’s justice — the debt we could not pay, paid in full.
Three
His Bodily Resurrection
On the third day He rose — not as a symbol, but in the flesh. The resurrection is the Father’s public verdict that the price was accepted, death is defeated, and all who are united to Christ will share His risen life.
Act Three
The Response
How then must we answer such a gift?
One
Repentance and Faith
“If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved.”
True faith is always accompanied by repentance — agreeing with God that you are sinful, confessing your sin, and making a conscious choice to turn from it, pursue Christ, and obey Him. It isn’t enough to believe facts about Christ; even the demons believe. True saving faith always responds in obedience.
Two
Grace Alone, Through Faith Alone
This salvation is not a wage we earn but a gift we receive. We are saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone — so that no one may boast. The response is real, but the rescue is entirely His.
Act Four
The Result
What grace secures for everyone who trusts in Christ.
Forgiveness
Every sin pardoned, the record wiped clean, no condemnation remaining for those in Christ.
Adoption
No longer enemies but sons and daughters, welcomed into the family of God and given His Spirit.
Eternal Life
Endless fellowship with the God who made us — the very purpose for which we were created.
